In the decades following surfing’s introduction around the world, the sport attracted more and more interest. Freeth traveled up and down the coast showing off the sport, and it soon caught on. Similarly, Freeth was brought from Hawaii to California by Henry Huntington to demonstrate his surfing skills as a means of publicity for a new railroad. Kahanamoku, an Olympic athlete and one of the most successful surfers in history, traveled to Australia and brought surfing with him, showing the sport off in Sydney. Much of surfing’s rise to fame can be attributed to just two people: Native Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku and American George Freeth. There were attempts to turn surfing into a tourist attraction in Hawaii, but because of the exorbitant costs of traveling to the islands, surfing became more successful as a cultural export. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that surfing really spread throughout the world. And the hand symbol that is often interpreted as “hang loose” - a fist from which the pinky and thumb are extended - is actually the Hawaiian shaka, a traditional form of greeting. Other Hawaiian words, like aloha (a greeting) or mahalo (“thank you”), are also sometimes roped into the surfing world. Wahine, for example, is a Hawaiian word for a Maori or Polynesian woman, but it is also used in English to refer to a female surfer. And while the Hawaiian language does not have a massive influence on modern surfer slang, it’s not entirely absent. The earliest surfing language, then, wasn’t English at all, but Hawaiian. Ancient Hawaiians regularly practiced surfing as an art form for a very long time, and it was recorded by Captain James Cook when he first visited the island in 1778, which was the first contact between Hawaiians and the Western world. Historians currently believe that surfing in some form existed in many places in the tropics, but it was Hawaii where it first came into its own. And thanks to this pop-culture saturation, you probably have heard a decent amount of surfer slang before, and might even have your own surfer impression sprinkled with abundant “gnarly”s and “far out”s.Īre surfers really still out there yelling “cowabunga!” and talking about “hanging ten,” though? In this Jargon Watch, we look at the history of surfer slang, as well as the sport itself. It’s a pretty small sport in the country - after all, most people don’t live near a surfing beach - but it has spawned countless movies, songs and summer romances. Surfing holds a special spot in American culture. Wuhu Island is a fictional tropical island that is the largest of an archipelago of various islands and rock formations. Most sports support multiplayer in those sports, the maximum number of players is two or four, depending on the game. Some of these sports are one-player, and some have a different version of the sport that is two-player. Air Sports ( parachuting, dogfighting, and piloting (referred to as "Island Flyover")).Bowling (including "100 Pin" and "Spin Control").Table tennis (including "Return Challenge").Basketball (as "3 Point Contest" and "Pickup Game").Swordplay (including "Duel", "Speed Slice" and "Showdown") ( Kendo-style).The other nine sports are entirely new and unique to the game. The only games returning from the original Wii Sports are Bowling and Golf, while Table Tennis was originally a game in Wii Play. Some sports involving more than two players support hot seat multiplayer, in which just one Wii Remote is needed and is shared among players while taking turns. In golf, the player can spin the ball by rotating the Wii Remote while swinging. For example, the game's new variation, table tennis, gives the player greater control over adding spin to the ball by twisting the Wii Remote while swinging. The new feature that Wii Sports Resort brings is Wii MotionPlus compatibility, which enables 1:1 control and allows the games to be played with greater accuracy. Most notably, in archery, the player holds the Wii Remote vertically to hold the bow and pulls back the Nunchuk to pull back the bow's string. Twelve different sports are available like the original Wii Sports game, the sports are each played by holding the Wii Remote (and in some cases, the Nunchuk) like the actual sport being replicated. Finally, the player will skydive to Wuhu Island. The first time a player starts the game, several instructional videos will play, then the strap usage screen and the Wii MotionPlus test. Wii Sports Resort is a sports video game set in a tropical island on an archipelago named Wuhu Island. A sequel called Nintendo Switch Sports was released on April 29, 2022. As of March 31, 2021, the game is the third best-selling game on the Wii, after its predecessor Wii Sports and Mario Kart Wii, with 33.14 million copies sold worldwide, which puts it at eighteenth in the best selling video games ever. Wii Sports Resort received positive reviews from critics for the improved controls, gameplay, and graphics. While Wii Sports Resort was first released as a stand-alone title, it was later bundled with newer Wii consoles alongside Wii Sports. Wii Sports Resort was first announced at E3 2008 and was released in Japan on June 25, 2009, and in nearly all other regions the following month. It is one of the first Wii games to require the Wii MotionPlus accessory, which was bundled with the game. Wii Sports Resort is a 2009 sports simulation video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii video game console and is the sequel to Wii Sports. They would not allow me to pay to have it shipped with UPS or FedEx or anyone else. Thank you for listening to my rant, avoid Old Navy, but even more so avoid LaserShip. So I spent an hour on the phone with LaserShip and with Old Navy, then had to call my bank and then had to go in person to my bank and spent an hour there filing a dispute. I re-ordered the same items, and the same thing happened again.īut now Old Navy told me that they couldn’t refund my money! I had to file a dispute with my bank! So I contacted Old Navy, they looked into it and issued me a refund. Not until I returned back to my computer and clicked on the tracking information, there it said that it was returned to the seller. The first order said it was delivered to me, so I went out looking for it. They have no photograph of either delivery. There is supposed to be a photograph taken as proof of delivery as told to me by an Old Navy manager. Endless runaround from both LaserShip and old navy. I have had 2 orders with Old Navy and 1 with Nordstrom never appear, even though they said they were delivered. would use such a poorly rated company as LaserShip. I cannot believe that such a huge company as gap Inc. I just went through a month long hassle with old Navy and Lasership. If I didn't follow the tracking info or emails from Old Navy how would I know that I was supposed to verify my address? They didn't leave anything in my mailbox or at the front door, they never called to notify me. I actually had to pay for this terrible shipping, UPS' was free. Also, they claimed it departed their facility at 10:12am and at 10:17am they attempted delivery.my shipping address is 60miles from their facility! Also even if this scenario was true, they never knocked, I have security cameras which were never set off, they went off for UPS lol. I checked the Lasership tracking, now updated on the 13th, and it said "Exception" "More info needed, please verify your shipping address". In the meantime, on Dec 11th, I ordered more pajamas from ON because Lasership's order was in packaging limbo, this new order was shipped same day UPS and it arrived at my doorstep on the 13th with no problems! I reached out to Lasership and was given an automated response about getting back to me within 72 hours. On the 10th I got an email from Old Navy saying their shipping partners were having delays and to check out the updated tracking info.nothing was updated. The 7th came and went, it's the holidays and understandable. It was sent out on Dec 1st with an ETA of the 7th. I ordered a package of pajamas on Nov 29. Tl dr Lasership package was delayed, never updated tracking, Claims attempted delivery but never did, never reached out to me to say that I needed to verify address, No other carrier has had this problem Has anyone else had a bad experience with Lasershit?! It's happened to me twice with them, this last time was the worst! Then when he finally did something to protect her because she wouldn't listen, she just does whatever to assist in getting him killed. Then she started to become a thorn in his side, constantly placing judgement on him and putting him on her own little trials because he wasn't doing what she wanted. She was lively and added an additional Spark to a character we adored. We were introduced to Shae in the first season. Lots of people's favorite characters die in Game of Thrones. Once she was captured and her life threatened, it was plain to see that all of Tyrion's fears and warnings of imminent danger were very real, and that his outburst was a manufactured last minute attempt to get her to safety. And not only did she not try, she went the extra mile to humiliate him. If it was really love, she should have tried to save him. Maybe she would have saved Tyrion, maybe not. Maybe she would have given her life for it, maybe she wouldn't have. This would have really messed up the entire legitimacy of the trial - the specific reason Tywin was doing it - and called the other testimonies into question. She could have stood up for him when she finally took the stand, told the judges and the attendees that she had her life threatened by the prosecution if she didn't tell their fake story. Then, when threatened with the very same pressures that weighted Tyrion, she caved immediately. She was always the person telling Tyrion not to listen to his father, his family, that he can do whatever he wants and leave with her. The point that irks people is that when you really do truly love someone, as she said she did, even Tyrion's outburst to get her to leave King's Landing shouldn't have totally crushed that - she still should have been willing, wanting, to defend his life. Far less harsh than betraying someone by putting their life on the line. You could argue that she did emotionally betray Tyrion as I said before, but that is like breaking up and being bitter about you're ex. You could speak about her dumb attitude towards Tyrion, but the breaking point for most people on why they want her dead is due to the fact that she did the trial. If Shae managed to get to the ship during the wedding, the gates would have likely trapped her. At the beginning of S4E3, Tywin commanded to bar the gates of the City's seas to hold the ships. In S4E2 just after Mace Tyrell gives his gift to Joffrey, Cersei points out the whore (Shae) and Tywin responds by having her at the Tower of the Hand before the wedding.įurthermore, In S4E2, Tyrion sent Shae to her ship and Bronn walked her there. Later on at the end of the Cersei and Jamie scene, that same spy comes in to report to Cersei. In S4E1 just after the Tyrion and Shae scene, you see Cersei's spy. If you want evidence of how she was taken by the Lannisters: If she was forced against her will, is that truly betrayal? No. Why do it? First off, says Kekilli, “The Lannisters found her and there was only a choice between agreeing to testify against Tyrion or die.” Not only did she straight-up lie and say he killed King Joffrey, but she framed her “confession” in such a way that made him a laughingstock. What caused the blowback, of course, is Shae testifying against Tyrion. This is what Sibel Kekilli, the actress of Shae, says about it: I've argued about empathizing Shae and why she didn't betray Tyrion, but people still seem to think that she did. Shae (Show version) didn't betray Tyrion. Looking forward to seeing this event at the end of HOTD on screen!įor more info see the guide and policy. Shot in Germany by George Krause on a meticulously prepared battlefield, Paths built its trenches two feet wider than the French originals to allow for the kind of bravura tracking shots that Max Ophuls, one of Kubrick's heroes, would have appreciated.īut when it came to immersing the viewer in the field of battle, Steven Spielberg's WWII opus Saving Private Ryan (1998) set a standard for future war movies that will be hard to match. Paths of Glory is as strong a statement as it is because its war scenes are impeccably filmed, so much so that Winston Churchill admired their authenticity. Starring Kirk Douglas and directed by Stanley Kubrick, its based-on-fact story of French military hypocrisy during the First World War shocked that nation to such an extent that the film was banned in France for nearly 20 years. (Top) Lewis Milestone’s All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) (Bottom) William Wyler’s The Best Years of Our Lives (1946).(Photos: Photofest) The Devastating Consequences of WarĪmerican filmmakers not only responded to war and other cataclysms virtually in real time-sometimes within a year of when the events were happening-they also responded to the same situations decades later, when advances in movie-making technology seemed to give the newer films a kind of edge, at least in terms of on-screen wizardry.Īmerican films made on World War I, for instance, included 1957's ironically titled Paths of Glory, an anti-war epic with an impeccable pedigree. With a devastating pandemic whose ultimate impact is still unknown very much with us, coupled with widespread discontent and mass protests over racial injustice, this seemed an appropriate time to look back and examine the kinds of compelling work directors have done in this vein in the past, to examine the widely differing ways they've used their gifts to come to terms with crises that were as unimaginable then as what we are currently going through seems now. Because directors are grappling with these issues themselves, are living through the same things we are, they have thoughts for us as well. It's not answers we look for necessarily, nothing so facile as that, but rather suggestions of possibilities, ideas of how to think about fraught situations. Maybe it's because the screen is so large and authoritative maybe because we all can cite something about life we first learned from film but it is there we instinctively go. In times of crisis and catastrophe, this ability of movies and their directors to communicate with audiences, to contextualize trauma and impact public opinion with their artistry, this gift, as Samuel Beckett memorably put it, "to find a form that accommodates the mess," invariably comes to the fore.įor the truth is we turn to the movies and their makers as we turn to our friends, when we are unsettled, unmoored, unable to rest easy. Difficult though it may be to believe for today's moviegoers, awash as we are in the cinema of overwhelming visual spectacle-superhero and otherwise-the movies have always sent messages in their own way, always talked to us and offered advice on what we could be thinking. Not that it matters who said it, because it's not really true. Was it Sam Goldwyn, Humphrey Bogart or even Moss Hart who initially posited, "If you've got a message, call Western Union"? It's a movie business truism so venerable no one can agree who said it first. Stanley Kubrick, in dark suit, directs from the trenches on location for Paths of Glory (1957). Even during the worst of times, directors around the globe found ways of coping with crisis by holding a mirror to society-for good The Midnight Ride of Paul RevereĪs Revere was settling into his Boston home in the early 1770s, he became active politically. The 1680 structure still stands today as the oldest building in downtown Boston. Revere sold the home in 1800, and it was purchased by his great-grandson roughly a century later to ensure it was preserved. After the death of his wife, Sarah, in 1773, he married Rachel Walker and they had eight additional children. Revere lived in his North End home on and off for 30 years as his family continued to evolve. In 1770, he bought the now-landmarked Paul Revere House at 19 North Square for his growing family. He reworked a Henry Pelham drawing in an engraving and widely distributed prints of the stark image of armed British troops taking aim at the colonists.īoston Massacre Sparks a Revolution Paul Revere’s HouseĪmid the growing political tensions in Boston, Revere continued to strengthen his roots in the colonial harbor city. One of Reveres’ best-known pieces of propaganda depicted the violent night. The tense standoff ended in the Boston Massacre, as the British used their bayonet rifles to shoot and kill five unarmed colonists. The growing unrest boiled over on March 5, 1770, when British troops and a crowd of colonists faced off on Boston’s King Street near the Customs house. With British troops in Boston and a rebellion stewing, Revere became a master propagandist, using his artisan skills to craft engravings that incited the colonists to join in the rebellion. Revere took part in the Stamp Act protests in 1765, which eventually led the Crown to repeal a tax that ignited the colonists’ hatred of taxation without representation.ĭid you know? Paul Revere did not gain immediate fame for his April 1775 "Midnight Ride." In fact, it wasn't until Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1861 poem, which greatly embellished Revere's role, that he became the folk hero we think of today. In the mid-1760s, as tensions were rising between the colonists and the British, he joined the rebellious Sons of Liberty. Revere’s network was also expanding to include local activists angered by British rule. He turned to dentistry to augment his income when the colonial economy faltered during a recession. The silversmith was resourceful and dabbled in a range of work, taking on apprentices and workers who created specialty flatware, silver bowls, tea sets and even casting the first bell in Boston in his foundry. He wed Sarah Orne in 1765, and they had eight children before she died nearly two decades later. Revere returned to Boston after a failed military expedition and started to build his family life and business. Here are the most popular game apps: Minecraft, Subway Surfers, Paper. It would seem useful to make a draft email on a phone or tablet (maybe some quick notes) to later revise and send from Outlook for Windows/Mac. Look at the Drafts folder, in this example you can see that the number of messages is the same (134). To check that the Drafts folder (or any folder) is synchronized with the server, open Outlook Web app, the browser based access to your mailbox. Outlook 2016 for Mac users don’t have to do anything! Outlook/Mac doesn’t let you choose the folders to sync but, thankfully, the Drafts folder is synchronized for Office 365/Exchange Server hosting. You can manually sync a folder with the cloud mailbox by selecting the folder then choosing Update Folder. Make sure the mail account is included in the group then check the box next to Drafts. In Outlook for Windows go to Send/Receive tab | Send/Receive Groups | Define Send/Receive Groups | select ‘All Accounts’ then click Edit. That’s why the email draft ‘handover’ ability isn’t obvious. That will make any drafts available on other machines which also sync the Drafts folder.īy default, Outlook for Windows does NOT synchronize the Drafts folder with the cloud/server mailbox. The trick is synchronizing the Drafts folder with the Exchange Server mailbox. In recent Outlook release it will appear in the right-hand pane (see above). The message editor will open and you can resume writing. To resume working on a draft message, just double-click on it. Your Drafts folder probably has some old partial messages that were saved before an Outlook or Windows crash. That’s where partially written emails sit ‘in limbo’ until they are sent.ĭrafts are saved automatically or you can click the Save button (Ctrl + S) to save the message as you’re working on it. The same works in reverse (start on Outlook, continue in OWA) or between Outlook for Windows or Mac linked to the same mail account. Once you’ve done the little tweak (see below) the draft email will appear in Outlook. Tip: if you’re worried about accidentally sending the draft message, don’t put anything in the TO: field. When you’re finished writing the message, just click to another message. It should be saved automatically but you can click Save to make sure it’s put into the Drafts folder.ĭon’t click Discard or (obviously) Send. Let’s start with a part-written email in Outlook Web Access (OWA), the browser based email client for Office 365/Exchange Server. Most commonly starting an email on one computer (a laptop or smarphone) then finishing it back on the desktop machine. If you’re using Office 365 hosting or Exchange Server with Outlook for Windows/Mac only a little tweak is necessary. Here’s how you start writing an Outlook email drafts on one computer and later continue writing it on another machine. Take it off heat and let it cool down a bit before serving, for about 20 minutes. If we plan to use the soaking water for cooking then rinse the In fact, it’s better to add the salt into the soaking water as the salty water will be absorbed by the beans resulting tastier beans. This thing is a minefield and have never been peer reviewed though so take it with a pinch of salt. According to folklore, eating beans on New Year’s Eve will bring us a prosperous, rich New Year. Studies seem to find no evidence that soaking would reduce flatulence causing gases nor helps too much reducing cooking times more than 20 minutes. Some claim to make a difference reducing the toxins or the trouble making gases while others haven’t ever heard about it. Soaking beans has a long tradition and recently it is a hot topic of debate as it should or shouldn’t be done. Generally, this doesn’t cause any disturbance as beans need at least 90 minutes of cooking or even more if the bean is old. Luckily, thirty minutes cooking greatly reduces the level of toxins in beans to safely edible level. It’s worth to note that Japanese live second longest so we either choose sushi or chorizo to live long but with both diet we can have beans.Īs it is with kidney beans, white navy beans are also toxic when eaten raw. Legumes such as beans are part of the Mediterranean diet which provides globally the longest lifespan for its beneficiaries. In other parts of the world, people haphazardly call this thing just white bean. The origin of the navy beans name roots in the fact that the US navy uses white beans as a staple food to feed its sailors since the mid-1800s. Complemented with a bit of protein and a tad of fat this dish could take us to 100 years easily. Navy beans contain fairly big amount of vitamin C, Iron, Vitamin B6 and Magnesium which are all great things to have to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Carbs from legumes are good because these little things are full of stuff that our body needs, opposite to starches like sugar and white flour.
